Retirement Housing 101: Affordability, Accessibility, and the Perfect Location

There are lots of decisions to make when thinking about retirement. Housing is a biggie, so let's break down what to look for:

First up, what can you afford? We're talking mortgage or rent, property taxes, insurance, utilities, just to start off. Making sure those costs won't cramp your retirement lifestyle is extremely important!

Second, how easy is it to get around in your house? As you get older, stairs and tight spaces might become a hassle. Thinking about things like single-story living, or where the washer and dryer are in the house can make life easier long-term.

Next, location, location, location! Are you close to family, friends, doctors, shopping, and things you enjoy doing? Do you want a peaceful suburb, a lively city, or a dedicated retirement community? Pick a spot that matches your vibe.

Also, size does matter. A big house might be lovely, but do you really want to spend your time cleaning and fixing it up? A smaller, low-maintenance place could be the way to go.

Don't forget about safety. You want a neighborhood and a home that feel secure, with good lighting, solid locks, and maybe a neighborhood watch program.

Finally, think about the long-term future. Might you need assisted living or in-home care someday? Will your home be able to handle that, or will you need to move again?

Some extra tips:

  • Start early! The sooner you start planning, the more options you'll have.

  • Check out potential places at different times of day. This will give you a feel for the neighborhood and any potential noise or traffic issues.

  • Get a professional inspection. Don't skip this before buying a home!

  • Renting might be better than buying. It all depends on your finances and what you want out of life. Don’t assume owning is better than renting without doing a cost analysis.
