Preparing for the Unexpected
Recently, I was out of town and a pipe burst in my home, causing major damage throughout the entire house.
When you're researching home insurance, there's a lot to think about to ensure you have the right coverage. You want to make sure your entire home is covered in case anything big happens (like what I’m experiencing!)
Consulting with your insurance professional once a year to guarantee that your coverage is up-to-date is an important use of your time.
Loss of Use
When researching homeowner insurance, make sure you are adequately covered for loss of use.
Loss of use coverage, also known as additional living expenses (ALE) insurance (Coverage D), pays for additional costs you might incur for reasonable housing and living expenses if a covered event makes your house temporarily uninhabitable while it's being repaired or rebuilt. Thankfully, we have this on our policy since we will not be able to live in our home for months.
Consult with the right professionals
I am very grateful to be working with ServPro of Tonawanda. When we discovered our burst pipe, ServPro was immediately responsive. They have been working tirelessly at our house for over a week assessing the damage, handling demolition, clearing everything out, packing up what can be salvaged, and working on mold remediation. They are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable when responding to our many questions.
Prepare in advance as much as you can
Nobody expects a housing disaster, but anything you can do in advance will help you cope later if something happens to your home. The number one piece of advice is to review your insurance policy carefully. If you're not careful, you might assume you're good to go, and end up with an unwelcome surprise. I’m thankful that our insurance company has been very helpful and that I have the right coverage in place.
