Secure and Savvy: A Guide to Online Shopping with Safety and Savings

It’s the time of year we are doing a lot of shopping online. First, it’s back to school sales, next the holiday shopping that starts earlier and earlier. Case in point, the Christmas displays that hit the stores before we celebrate Halloween.

The convenience of online shopping has revolutionized the way we shop, offering a world of products at our fingertips. However, with this convenience comes the responsibility of ensuring secure transactions. If you love the convenience of online shopping, make sure you protect yourself online from credit card theft, fraud, scams, and sometimes yourself.

Choose Trusted Websites

Before making any online purchase, ensure you're on a reputable and secure website. Look for "https://" in the website's URL, which indicates a secure connection. Additionally, research the website's reviews and ratings to gauge its legitimacy.

Use Strong Passwords

Creating strong, unique passwords for your online shopping accounts is a must. Avoid using easily guessable passwords or reusing passwords across multiple accounts. Incorporate a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters for added security. If you are determined to use a password that you can remember over multiple accounts, start that password with the website name. For instance, if your password is 1234Qwer – amaz1234Qwer (Amazon), lowes1234Qwer (Lowes) – get it?) It also allows you to know where your password was compromised if you find out it is.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Many online retailers now offer two-factor authentication, which adds an extra layer of security by requiring a verification code in addition to your password. This helps prevent unauthorized access to your accounts.

Shop on Secure Networks

Avoid making online purchases while connected to public Wi-Fi networks, as they may not be secure. Instead, use a secure and private network to safeguard your personal and financial information.

Keep Software Updated

Regularly update your operating system, web browser, and antivirus software to ensure you have the latest security patches and protections against potential threats. For instance, you have a notice Apple or Microsoft wants to update your system don’t put it off!

Beware of Phishing Scams

Be cautious of unsolicited emails or messages claiming to be from online retailers. These may be phishing attempts aimed at stealing your personal and financial information. Always double-check the sender's email address and avoid clicking on suspicious links.

Use Virtual Credit Cards

Some credit card companies offer virtual credit cards for online transactions. These temporary cards have limited funds and can help prevent unauthorized charges in case your information is compromised.

Compare Prices and Use Coupons

One of the benefits of online shopping is the ability to compare prices across different retailers. Utilize price comparison websites and browser extensions to ensure you're getting the best deal. Additionally, look for online coupons, promo codes, and cashback offers to save even more.

Subscribe to Newsletters

Many online retailers offer exclusive discounts to subscribers of their newsletters. Consider signing up for newsletters from your favorite stores to receive notifications about sales and special offers.

Abandon Your Cart

This may sound counterintuitive, but sometimes leaving items in your online shopping cart for a day or two can lead to receiving special discount offers from the retailer. They might entice you to complete the purchase by offering a reduced price or you may decide later on you really don’t need that item. See my latest video on this.

Shop During Sales Events

Online retailers often have sales events, such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and seasonal clearances. Timing your purchases during these events can lead to substantial savings.

Use Cashback and Reward Programs

Many credit cards and online platforms offer cashback and reward programs for making purchases. Check if your credit card has such benefits, or consider using dedicated cashback apps to earn money back on your purchases.

Online shopping can be both secure and budget-friendly with the right precautions and strategies. By finding the balance between security and savings, you can enjoy a worry-free and rewarding online shopping experience.
